Root Canal 101: What Really Happens During Treatment

If your dentist has recommended a root canal, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure. The name alone tends to spark anxiety—but in reality, root canal treatment is a straightforward, routine procedure that saves millions of teeth every year. Let’s walk through exactly what to expect, from the first appointment to the final result, so you can feel confident and prepared.

What Is a Root Canal, Exactly?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside the tooth. When the soft tissue (pulp) within a tooth becomes infected—often due to deep decay, a crack, or trauma—it needs to be removed to save the tooth. The area is then cleaned, sealed, and protected with a filling or crown.

Root canal treatment allows you to keep your natural tooth, avoid extraction, and relieve pain while restoring function.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

You may not always realise something is wrong right away. But here are common signs a root canal could be necessary:

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers
  • Swollen gums or a pimple-like bump near the affected tooth
  • Deep decay visible on X-rays
  • Pain when chewing or biting down

Step-by-Step: What Happens During a Root Canal?

Here’s what you can expect at each stage of the treatment:

1. Initial Examination and X-Rays

Your dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays to assess the extent of the infection and confirm that a root canal is the best option.

2. Local Anaesthetic

To keep you comfortable, the area around the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic. Most patients say the procedure feels no different to getting a standard filling.

3. Accessing the Tooth

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.

4. Cleaning and Shaping

The infected pulp is removed using fine instruments. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to ensure all bacteria are eliminated.

5. Sealing the Tooth

Once cleaned, the space is filled with a biocompatible material (called gutta-percha) and sealed to prevent future infection.

6. Restoration

In most cases, the tooth will need a crown to restore full strength and function. This may be placed at a second appointment once healing is complete.

How Long Does the Treatment Take?

Most root canals can be completed in one to two visits, depending on the complexity of the tooth. Molars, which have more roots, may take slightly longer than front teeth.

Aftercare: What to Expect Post-Treatment

  • Mild Discomfort: You may experience some sensitivity or tenderness for a few days, especially when chewing. This is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Avoid Chewing on That Side: Until the final crown is placed, it’s best to avoid hard foods on the treated tooth.
  • Follow-Up Appointment: Your dentist will book you in to place a permanent restoration—usually a custom-made crown to protect and strengthen the tooth.

Myths About Root Canal Treatment

Myth 1: Root Canals Are Painful

Thanks to modern dentistry, root canals are no more painful than a standard filling. In fact, they relieve pain.

Myth 2: The Tooth Will Be Dead

The tooth is no longer “alive” in the sense of having pulp tissue, but it remains functional, supported by surrounding bone and tissues.

Myth 3: It’s Better to Just Pull the Tooth

While extraction may seem simpler, keeping your natural teeth is almost always better for function, appearance, and long-term oral health.
